In this short video clip from the longer video installed in the State of Nature exhibit, motile green algae (likely a Chlamydomonas species) are seen swimming downward in organized groups. The algae are attracted to light (e.g., phototactic) that was shining into the water from above. After accumulating near the surface, organized groups of them swim down from the surface where they disperse and eventually swim back to the light (sort of like a lava lamp). Their movements are reminiscent of murmurations of birds.
